I painted this on the day I left Nantucket. That morning, I had gone for a walk and kept noticing the wildflowers, the dense greens and the hazy light coming through the trees. It was also incredibly windy, with a storm moving in.

I wasn’t trying to paint any of that literally, but I think some of it came through anyway—the softened color, the movement and the contrast between something grounded and everything around it shifting.

I started without a fixed image, but with a clear color palette. What I love most are the passages that feel slightly weathered—the yellow peeking through in the upper right, the muted pinks, blues and ochres through the middle, and the dark note just above center. They’re not the first things you see, but they’re the parts I keep coming back to.
