Becoming started as pure play.

I wasn’t working from an idea or trying to make the painting about anything. I was following what was happening on the paper—adding, lifting, letting forms run into one another, then responding to whatever appeared.

Looking at it now, I’m struck by how much of the painting seems to be in the middle of becoming something. Forms gather and dissolve. Some are more defined, while others seem to be arriving or disappearing. Even the quieter areas don’t feel entirely still.

Maybe that’s why the title came so easily afterward.

There are periods when we can’t quite name what is changing yet. We just know that something is.

I like that the painting doesn’t tell us what comes next.
